LONDON (AP) – Manchester City stumbled on the road yet again, needing a late deflected goal by Yaya Toure for a 1-1 tie at Stoke on Saturday that put rival Manchester United in position to open a three-point lead in the Premier League.

Peter Crouch scored for Stoke in the 59th minute after his header was headed back to him by Jermaine Pennant. Crouch flicked the ball up to himself and then volleyed past goalkeeper Joe Hart from about 25 yards. Toure’s goal in the 76th hit Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross and went past goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

Manchester City (22-4-4) regained first place on goal difference over United (22-3-4), which has a game in hand and hosts Fulham on Monday. While City is 15-0 in the league at home, it dropped to 7-4-4 on the road.

Third-place Arsenal (18-8-4) beat visiting Aston Villa 3-0 on goals by Kieran Gibbs in the 16th minute, Theo Walcott in the 25th and Mikel Arteta in the 90th. The goals by Gibbs and Walcott marked the first time since 1997 two English players scored in a league match for the Gunners.

Fourth-place Tottenham (16-7-7) dropped three points back of Arsenal with a 0-0 tie at Chelsea (14-8-8), which is in danger of missing the Champions League for the first time since 2003.

Bolton marked its first match since Fabrice Muamba’s on-field cardiac arrest last weekend with a 2-1 victory over Blackburn on two goals from David Wheater and climbed out of the relegation zone. Fans held up cards as part of a mosaic that spelt out “Muamba 6″ before kickoff while there was a period of applause for the midfielder.

Queens Park Rangers replaced Bolton in the bottom three after a 3-1 loss at Sunderland, with French striker Djibril Cisse ejected for the visitors for the second time since his January move from Lazio.

Wolverhampton stayed last with a 2-1 defeat at Norwich. Wigan, which is 19th, boosted its survival hopes with a 2-1 win at seventh-place Liverpool. Everton won 2-0 at Swansea.

In the second-tier League Championship, American midfielder Robbie Rogers dressed for Leeds for the first time since sustaining a concussion in his debut for the club on Feb. 18. Rogers didn’t get into the match, a 1-0 win at Millwall.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) – Cristiano Ronaldo became the fastest player to reach 100 goals in the Spanish league, scoring twice as first-place Real Madrid routed Real Socided 5-1.

Ronaldo scored in the 32nd and 56th minutes, giving him 101 goals in 92 league games. He broke the mark set in the 1960s by Real Madrid’s Ferenc Puskas, who reached 100 in 105 matches.

Gonzalo Higuain put Madrid (24-2-3) ahead in the sixth minute, and Karim Benzema added goals in the 40th and 49th.

Barcelona (22-2-6) kept pace with a 2-0 victory at Mallorca. Lionel Messi extended his scoring streak to eight games with a poorly defended free kick in the 25th minute. He became the first player in a top-level European league to score 55 goals in a season since Sporting Lisbon’s Mario Jardel in 2002. Messi and Ronaldo are tied for the league lead with 35 goals each, five shy of the record Ronaldo set last season.

Barcelona’s Thiago Alcantara was ejected for his second yellow card in the 56th, and Gerard Pique scored in the 79th by volleying the rebound after Messi’s shot his a post.

MILAN (AP) – Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice, getting the tiebreaking goal in the 83rd minute to give AC Milan a 2-1 victory over visiting Roma that opened a seven-point lead in Serie A.

Pablo Osvaldo gave Roma the lead against the run of play in the 44th, but Ibrahimovic tied it in the 53rd after a hand ball by Daniele De Rossi in the penalty area. Ibrahimovic put Milan (20-4-6) ahead with his league-leading 22nd goal.

Milan defender Thiago Silva came out in the 10th minute clutching his right thigh and is questionable for Wednesday’s first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal against Barcelona.

Second-place Juventus (14-0-14) hosts seventh-place Inter Milan (12-11-5) on Sunday.

BERLIN (AP) – Bayern Munich survived a late scare to beat Hannover 2-1 as Toni Kroos scored in the 36th minute and substitute Mario Gomez got his league-leading 23rd goal of the season in the 68th.

Hannover substitute Didier Ya Konan scored in the 74th but Bayern (18-6-3) held on to closer within two points of defending champion Borussia Dortmund (18-3-5), which visits relegation-threatened Cologne on Sunday.

Hoffenheim ended Borussia Moenchengladbach’s 16-game home unbeaten streak with a 2-1 win, and Schalke (17-8-2) beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 on a pair of goals by -Jan Huntelaar to move into third, the last automatic Champions League qualification place.

PARIS (AP) – Montpellier moved into first place in the French league with a 1-0 victory over Saint-Etienne on an 89th-minute goal by Olivier Giroud.

Montpellier (18-5-6) moved one point ahead of Paris Saint-Germain (17-3-8), which hosts Bordeaux on Sunday.

Ukraine rape victim searches for justice

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? The 18-year-old woman, prosecutors say, was gang-raped by three young men, who tried to cover up their crime by strangling her with a cord, wrapping her naked body in a blanket and dumping her at an abandoned construction site ? where they set her on fire.

Amazingly, Oksana Makar survived.

But her quest for justice seemed doomed after the police released two of the three suspects whose parents had political connections in the provincial Ukrainian region.

Her case galvanized Ukrainians fed up with the official corruption that allows people with money and connections to avoid punishment, whether for violating traffic laws or more serious crimes. The protection also extends to their children, known here as “mazhory,” roughly translated as rich brats.

After a national protest campaign, the police arrested the two released suspects and charged all three with rape. The one who has remained in custody was also charged with attempted murder.

Makar remains hospitalized, with burns over more than half of her body and severe damage to her lungs. Her right arm was amputated to stop the spread of gangrene.

Her mother said she used to be a cheerful young woman with many friends in Mykolaiv, a shipbuilding city of about a half million residents some 500 kilometers (300 miles) south of the capital, Kiev. She liked dancing in clubs, boxing and bungee jumping.

That life ended on March 9 when Makar met two young men at a bar and they invited her to a friend’s apartment.

One suspect, identified as Yevhen K., told investigators that he and two friends had sex with Makar repeatedly, including at least one time that he admitted was rape.

A videotape of his interrogation, whose authenticity has been confirmed by authorities, was shown on Ukrainian television: “She yelled and swung her arms around and I raped her,” said the 23-year-old suspect.

After Makar threatened to call police, the suspect said he first tried to strangle her with his bare hands and then finish her off with a piece of white cable he found in the apartment. She lost consciousness.

The suspect said he and his friends wrapped Makar’s naked body in a blanket and dumped it into a pit at a deserted construction site. He said he then dropped a pillow case into the pit and set it on fire.

Afterward, he said, they went home and changed into new clothes. They bought vodka at a store and went to a food stand, where one suspect ordered tea and the other a beer.

“We sat down, had a smoke and then went our own ways,” said Yevhen K., the suspect accused of attempted murder as well as rape.

Makar was saved when a passing car happened to stall right next to the construction site. The three suspects were soon arrested, and two set free.

Interior Minister Vitaly Zakharchenko has confirmed that the parents of two of the suspects are former government officials in the Mykolaiv region. Makar’s mother, Tetyana Surovitska, accused police of freeing them because of their parents’ connections.

“Where is justice?” Surovitska said in an interview with a local television channel. “Is it because I don’t have cars and apartments and connections and I cannot turn to anyone?”

She received overwhelming support not only in Mykolaiv but across the country from people tired of seeing government officials and their children go unpunished for violent crimes, including assault and deadly road accidents.

There have been dozens of cases of “mazhory” driving expensive cars while drunk and hitting pedestrians, sometimes killing them, and walking away, said political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko. The same thing often happens in Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union.

“Unfortunately, this situation is typical of most post-Soviet countries when either connections or corruption is used: A high-ranking official makes a call or money is paid to a senior police official, and a person who committed a serious crime is set free,” Fesenko said.

“The Ukrainian justice system is dependent on those with power and money.”

Makar’s case clearly hit a nerve among Ukrainians, setting off several protests in Mykolaiv and elsewhere.

During one rally in Mykolaiv, dozens of activists protested outside the offices of prosecutors and police, demanding that they punish the perpetrators of the rape as well as the officers who released the two suspects.

Protests, organized on social networking sites, were also held in the Black Sea port of Odessa and the eastern city of Kharkiv. In Kiev, five members of the women’s rights group Femen, which stages topless protests, bared their chests on top of the entrance to the Prosecutor General’s Office and held banners reading “Death to the Sadists” and “Execute the Bastards.”

Meanwhile, dozens of Mykolaiv residents rushed to donate blood for Makar and sympathizers from across the country sent donations to her mother. Makar is in a hospital in the eastern city of Donetsk, where she was operated on this week by a burn specialist from Switzerland. She remains in grave condition.

The Prosecutor General’s Office is investigating Surovitska’s claims that the suspects were released illegally.

President Viktor Yanukovych is also looking into the case.

To Surovitska, the high-level interest is little consolation as she cares for her only daughter.

“She loved life so much, but they destroyed her body, her soul and her spirit,” Surovitska said in a phone interview. “They destroyed my child.”

Unnamed Samsung exec says quad-core Exynos inside Galaxy S III, LTE on-chip

Exynos

An unnamed Samsung exec hinted to the Korea Times that its upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S III, will include a next-gen quad-core Exynos chip that will incorporate LTE and WCDMA radios. Of course, such a revelation shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise since both its predecessors were built around home grown silicon… at least originally. According to the source, Sammy is trying to become more self reliant and distance itself from Qualcomm which has provided single-chip solutions for a number of the manufacturer’s high-end handsets. The new AP appears to be the 32nm slab of silicon we heard about before MWC, which is sporting four A9 cores and not the more powerful A15. The executive said the development of the all-in-one chip is complete and its simply a matter of sticking them inside smartphones. Now, when exactly we can hope to see such a device hit the market is still a bit of a mystery.

Apple dips into cash pile, will pay?dividends

By msnbc.com staff

Apple, sitting on a cash hoard of nearly $100 billion, said Monday it will begin paying a quarterly dividend of $2.65 a share this year and spend another $10 billion on a stock repurchase program.

Wall Street investors and analysts had increasingly bet that Apple would return cash to its shareholders, especially after Chief Executive Tim Cook’s commented that there were “active discussions” at top levels about how to handle the growing cash pile.

Subject to “declaration” by its board of directors, Apple will begin paying a quarterly dividend of $2.65 per share in its fiscal fourth quarter, which begins July 1.

The board also has authorized a $10 billion share repurchase program beginning in fiscal 2013, which begins Sept. 30.

The repurchase program is expected to be executed over three years, with the primary objective of neutralizing the impact of dilution from future employee equity grants and employee stock purchase programs.

?This is even better than expected,? said Stephanie Link, head of research at investment news website TheStreet.com. While the dividend news was expected, the share buyback program was more, she said. Stock buybacks tend to help buoy share prices.

The fact that Apple, which used to hold its product development plans close to its chest under former CEO Steve Jobs, is getting more transparent about its activities, is also good news, she told CNBC.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Execs: At $2.65 Per Share, Apple To Become One Of Largest Dividend Payers In The U.S.

Apple-MoneyLast night, the news broke that Apple would be holding an “impromptu” conference call to talk about just what it plans to do with that nearly $100 billion in cash reserves it has in Scrooge McDuck’s Money Bin. Of course, Slate told us that Apple’s decision would be “a really big deal.” And, albeit without pyrotechnics, it was a big deal. For existing and new shareholders alike. The conference call this morning was designed to discuss Apple’s decision, which it then announced via press release this morning that it will be initiating a quarterly dividend of $2.65 per share, along with a $10 billion share repurchase program commencing in September 2012. At $2.5 billion per quarter and $10 billion over the year, Apple will become one of the largest dividend payers of all companies, according to Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer.

US man captured by militia in Iraq released to UN

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Wearing a U.S. Army uniform and flanked by Iraqi lawmakers, an American citizen announced Saturday that he was being released from more than nine months of imprisonment by a Shiite militia that for years targeted U.S. troops.

The man did not identify himself. But at a bizarre press conference outside the Green Zone in Baghdad, lawmakers showed U.S.-issued military and contractor ID cards that identified him as Randy Michael Hultz.

Speaking calmly and tripping over Arabic names in a monotone voice, Hultz said he was grateful for his release.

“It was explained to me that this is a gift to me, my family and to the American people who oppose the war,” he said at the press conference that was held for Iraqi media.

He gave scant details of what he described as a “kidnapping,” or how he was treated while captured.

“I was taken inside Baghdad and kept in and around different locations within the city,” Hultz said. The kidnappers, he said, were from the Promised Day Brigade, a branch of the Mahdi Army, which is a militia that is controlled by the anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Al-Sadr’s militia led some of the bloodiest attacks against American troops at the height of the sectarian fighting in Iraq that brought the country to the brink of civil war. Followers of the cleric, who currently is believed to be studying in Iran, led the government’s demands for U.S. troops to leave Iraq last December after nearly nine years of war.

Al-Sadr disbanded most of his militia and joined politics although he kept the Promised Day Brigade, a smaller group of fighters who carried out attacks against U.S. troops and facilities.

The Shiite cleric’s political wing has 40 lawmakers in parliament, two of whom appeared with Hultz late Saturday.

Hultz was flanked at the press conference by lawmakers Maha al-Douri and Qusay al-Suhail, the deputy speaker of Iraq’s parliament. Al-Douri read a statement she said was from the Promised Day Brigade, which said it kidnapped Hultz mainly as “revenge for the beloved Iraqi nation and restrain for the American forces.”

Al-Douri said the militia released Hultz without any negotiating or pressure from the government or diplomats. She called the release “a gift to his family” and “to explain the picture of real Islam.”

“This is a clear message from the sons of Iraq to the U.S. administration about the good will to liberate Iraq and its complete sovereignty,” she said. She said Hultz is 59.

Hultz said he deployed to Iraq in 2003 as an active-duty soldier but left the military after 15 months. At that point, he said, he worked in a “civilian capacity” until his kidnapping on June 18, 2011.

Hultz did not wear any patches on his Amy green digitalized camouflage uniform that would identify his rank or what unit he may have served with. According to the two ID cards displayed at the press conference, he was active-duty military from January 2004 to February 2005, and a U.S. contractor from December 2005 to November 2007.

Sadrist officials said Hultz was taken into the Green Zone immediately after the press conference and turned over to the United Nations mission in Iraq. U.N. spokeswoman Radhia Achouri confirmed that the man was at the mission’s compound Saturday night while the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad tried to verify his identity.

He was transferred to the U.S. Embassy late Saturday, spokesman Michael McClellan said.

Even Iraqi security forces were taken aback at the announcement. A senior Iraqi security official said intelligence indicated that the Promised Day Brigade had captured an American, but did not have enough reliable information to confirm it.

The official said two other Americans who worked as contractors for security firms still are being held by militants. He did not elaborate, and spoke only on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

Hundreds of thousands of contractors, both American and other nationalities, worked alongside American troops and in other support roles throughout the war. Thousands still remain to help train Iraqi security forces on military equipment and to protect the massive U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and its diplomats across Iraq.

Senior Sadrist politician Abdul Hadi al-Mutairi said Hultz is married and has two sons. He “was treated well during his nine month imprisonment,” al-Mutairi said, even though he said Hultz contributed in U.S. battles against the Madhi Army in the Sadr City neighborhood in Baghdad and the holy Shiite city of Najaf, south of the capital.
